"Je suis une pomme" is a stylized art book disguised as a way to learn basic French nouns. Illustrated by Rebekah Simensen, aka ninjagrl, pieces of fruit come to life and introduce themselves in this delightful book that is fun for the whole family.
I never knew a cherry could be so cute!
Hi! I'm Rebekah Simensen, aka ninjagrl. I've been drawing and painting since I owned my first box of Crayola crayons. In 2005 I started drawing my ninjagrl character on the streets of Chicago.
While it might seem somewhat pretentious for an English-speaking person without a large French vocabulary to write a book in French, the words in the book are very simple and its creation stemmed from a personal need.
Back when my son, Luke, was just a year old my husband and I toyed with the idea of moving to France. So we started to learn a bit of French "just in case."
So far we've only visited France, but we've managed to pick up a little bit of French here and there. After a while we wanted to find some books to help teach Luke more words.
As it turns out, it was surprisingly hard to find French books in the States. We bought a few story books online, but they weren't exactly what we were looking for.
I've long wanted to try my hand at making a book for children. One day my husband had the idea that I should do an illustration of one of our favorite phrases, "Je suis une pomme de terre."
From there the project took on a life of its own.
Maybe! If you're interested in other languages let me know and we'll see what we can do!
Yes! We currently have plans to do books based on vegetables, farm animals, wild animals, and sea creatures.
We're going to sell a few hand signed copies from ninjagrl.com but they will also be available from Amazon.com. Join the mailing list to be notified when we get close to publishing!
Great! Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I'll be happy to chat with you!
